He set up his equipment on the writing desk, and a few minutes later a counterfeited, 3-D-printed room key sat in the device, with its companion magnetic strip ready for use. Aching for some distraction as he waited for the right time to make his move, Jay turned to the TV. The ongoing show featuring long-legged beauties dancing around an overweight, middle-aged host made him smile. The show’s naivety, in stark contrast with the more sophisticated entertainment available on board the ship, was irresistible. He sat down on the side of the bed, his stomach complaining for lack of nourishment, reached for a can of soda from the minibar, and stretched back to enjoy the show.

The Order frowned upon this kind of unfiltered exposure to the local culture because of its potential for ideological contamination. However, chasing away the boredom of idleness deserved the risk of a more extensive debriefing once the ship returned to Homeland.

At last, the loud chatter of the two girls leaving their room filled the hallway as they headed to the elevator. Ten minutes after the last giggle, he left his room carrying an ice bucket and walked toward the elevator. After stepping out of range of the surveillance cameras in the hall, he turned around, waited a minute, and walked back, passing in front of the girls’ room. A small adhesive device shot out of his left hand and activated on contact with the door. It produced a virtual image of the empty hall, detectable by the surveillance cameras but invisible to a casual hotel customer passing by. His actions shrouded by the projected hologram, Jay inserted the key, dampening the sound coming from the mechanism with his gloved fingertips. He cracked open the door, squeezed through the gap, and deactivated the hall projector.

Towels, makeup items, and clothes cluttered the luxurious space, its atmosphere filled by two competing feminine perfumes of different sensuality. Neither of the two girls had taken their purse. One sat on the dressing table, the other on its side, its contents streamed on the bed sheets. From the looks of it, he thought, they won’t be gone long.

The safe contained only one passport and two small pieces of jewelry. The shopping bags on the luggage rack contained the usual tourist purchases. No watch. He scanned the handbag on the bed to document its contents before rifling through it, and turned it over, adding only a packet of gum and a feminine product to the variety of items scattered on the bed. After replacing the bag to its original position, he approached the reading desk. The purse’s short handle was, in fact, a long strap that loosened when he attempted to lift the item using it. The bag capsized, spilling its contents on the floor. Disappointed in being responsible for such an amateurish mistake, Jay queried the last image of the bag recorded by his scanner. The fuzzy picture, acquired upon the girls’ entry in the hotel, proved the now missing watch should have been in the purse.
